Recognized as a key figure in Venezuelan art during the 1980s and 1990s, Van Dalen continues her practice to this day. Her large-scale urban mural <em data-start=\"455\" data-end=\"472\">Jard\u00edn Lum\u00ednico<\/em> (2004\u20132005) in Caracas is a landmark public work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"459\" data-end=\"759\">In 1977, Van Dalen completed a four-year degree in graphic design at the Instituto de Dise\u00f1o IDD, Fundaci\u00f3n Neumann-INCE, in Caracas, Venezuela\u2014a pioneering institution in design education and the visual arts in Latin America. Between 1980 and 1986, Van Dalen further developed her artistic practice by training and collaborating with artist Yaacov Agam in a groundbreaking visual education program in Paris, France. Since 2011, she has been based in the United States, where she continues her practice at her Miami studio.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">Van Dalen\u2019s artwork has been the subject of several solo exhibitions such as <b>Pinturas y dibujos<\/b>, Galer\u00eda Minotauro, Caracas, 1985;\u00a0<b>Patricia Van Dalen<\/b>, Sala RG, Casa de R\u00f3mulo Gallegos, Caracas, 1991;\u00a0<b>Primavera<\/b>, Sala Mendoza, Caracas, 1993;\u00a0<b>Casa\/Jard\u00edn\/Ventanas<\/b>, Universidad Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar,\u00a0Caracas, 1998;\u00a0<b>Del cosmos al jard\u00edn<\/b>, Museo de los Ni\u00f1os, Caracas, 1999;\u00a0<b>Luminous Gardens<\/b>, Fairchild Tropical Garden, Miami, 2003;\u00a0<b>Color Fragmentado<\/b>, Sala TAC, Caracas, 2008;\u00a0<b>Colecci\u00f3n primavera-verano 2010<\/b>, Galer\u00eda La Cuadra, Caracas, 2010; <b>El Color como Estructura: \u00c1mbitos Expandidos<\/b> at La Caja Centro Cultural Chacao and <b>El Color como Estructura: Contingencias Modulares <\/b>at Galer\u00eda GBG Arts, both in Caracas, in 2012; and, more recently, <b>High Voltage<\/b> in 2013, and <b>Ride the Rail<\/b> in 2017, both at ArtMedia Gallery in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">Additionally, special projects such as <b>Operativo Grapas<\/b>, a one-day interactive solo exhibition of the <em>Engrapadas<\/em> series, in Miami in 2016; <b>Abstract Cabinet. Patricia Van Dalen and Emilio Narciso. Duo Project<\/b>, at Imago Gallery in Miami, in 2018; <b>(En)grapadas<\/b>, a selection of stapled paper collages in Cesta Rep\u00fablica in Madrid, 2019; and the design of <b>Iznik tiles<\/b> for the Modern Tiles collection, at the Iznik Foundation Research Center in Iznik, Turkey. Also, she has created several bespoke hand-tufted rugs woven at Atelier Pinton for private collections in New York and Caracas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, such as <b>Bienal Nacional de Arte de Guayana<\/b>, <b>Salon Aragua,<\/b> and <b>Sal\u00f3n Michelena<\/b>, in Venezuela; <b>Grands et Jeunes d\u2019Aujourd\u2019hui,<\/b> in Paris, France; <b>Novos Valores da Arte Latino-Americana<\/b>, in Brasilia; the <b>Bienal de Estandartes<\/b>, in Tijuana, Mexico; and <b>Bienal Barro de Am\u00e9rica Roberto Guevara<\/b>, in Venezuela and Brazil. The most recent group exhibitions are <b>For Now: Contemporary Venezuelan Art of the Miami Diaspora,<\/b> held at the Coral Gables Museum in 2019; <b>Referencias cruzadas: Arte Contempor\u00e1neo de Venezuela<\/b>, Museo de Arte Contempor\u00e1neo de Panam\u00e1, in 2020, and the <b>IV Triennial Art in Golf<\/b>, Arte FITS Foundation, Puerto Rico, in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">In addition to her extensive work on canvas and paper showcased in private and public collections internationally, Van Dalen has created numerous <b>site-specific sculptural installations<\/b>, primarily in Venezuela and the United States. Notable installations include <b>Luminous Gardens<\/b> (2003) at Fairchild Tropical Garden, <b>Fragmented Light<\/b> (2011) at the University of Georgia\u2019s Miller Learning Center, <b>Natural Intersections<\/b> (2014) at The Kampong Botanical Garden, <b>DataHall<\/b> (2014) for the Institute for Data Science and Computing at the University of Miami, and <b>Compass<\/b> (2022) at The Society of The Four Arts in Palm Beach, FL, as the <b>2022-2023 Beyer Artist in Residence.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">The use of media in her body of work ranges from painting, drawings, collages, prints, assemblages, photography, and sewings to the design of stained glass, tapestries, and rugs. Her interest in the intervention of architectural spaces is similarly evident in permanent works created for private residences in Venezuela and the US, as well as public murals in Caracas, such as the urban-scale mural <b>Jard\u00edn Lum\u00ednico,<\/b> and the mural <b>Pajaritos<\/b>, both in ceramic; and in eastern Venezuela, the mosaic floor of the <b>Jard\u00edn de Calas<\/b> plaza, in R\u00edo Caribe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">She has earned various awards throughout her career, including the <b>Second Prize at the II Biennale of Visual Arts Christian Dior<\/b>, Caracas, 1991; the <b>First Prize at the I Sal\u00f3n Nacional de Artes Visuales<\/b>, Caracas, 1992; the <b>Unique Prize<\/b> at the 2001 competition for the commission of a large scale mural along the Prados del Este Highway, in Caracas; and the <b>2010 Established Artist AICA Award <\/b>by the <b>International Association of Art Critics<\/b>, Venezuela Chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #p1;\">Van Dalen has taught at the <b>Instituto de Dise\u00f1o<\/b> Foundation, the <b>School of Architecture<\/b> of the Central University of Venezuela, and the <b>Villa Planchart<\/b> Foundation, among others, in Caracas.\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">She teaches workshops in educational and cultural institutions in Miami, such as\u00a0<b>Miami Dade College<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>Museum of Art and Design, MOAD-MDC<\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0In 2023, she conducted a series of workshops on \u201c(Re)Creating Modern Masterpieces\u201d at The Society of <b>The Four Arts in Palm Beach<\/b> as the <b>2022-2023 Beyer Artist-in-Residence<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Patricia Van Dalen is a Distinguished Member of the Taller de Artistas Gr\u00e1ficos Asociados Luisa Palacios (TAGA), Caracas, Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3p1;\">As an abstract artist, Van Dalen explores the poetics of structures in her work through the fragmentation that affects form, line, surface, space, and color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Patricia Van Dalen (Maracaibo, Venezuela) is a visual artist based in Miami, United States, with a career spanning four decades.
